Vitamin B3 is a water-soluble vitamin (soluble in water). It comprises of two components: the nicotinic acid or niacin and niacinamide or nicotinamide.

The body synthesizes it in small quantities, from tryptophan, an essential amino acid. This is mainly animal protein (eggs, milk, poultry in particular) that provide the body tryptophan needed to produce vitamin B3. For this production, the body also needs vitamin B6, B2 and magnesium.

The niacin is the source of two important coenzymes involved in over 200 enzymatic reactions and is therefore involved in many functions. It allows particular degradation and the use of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It plays a role in the formation of red blood cells, blood circulation, transporting oxygen to cells, the functioning of the digestive system and nervous system. It is also necessary for the synthesis of sex hormones and the production of neurotransmitters.

Supplements of vitamin B3, as is the case for the other Group B vitamins are absorbed better when taken with a meal.
Niacin can also:
  • treat pellagra and cholesterol
  • treat atherosclerosis
  • relieve the symptoms of intermittent claudication.
