An oral ulcer, more commonly known as a mouth sore, is a painful lesion sitting inside the mouth, a cheek or gum. The ulcer is usually red or yellow. The oral ulcers are isolated or grouped and particularly painful or embarrassing. They disappear spontaneously within 7 to 10 days. The oral ulcers should not be confused with cold sores serving on the lips, caused by a virus. There are several types of oral ulcers. A single oral ulcer is usually caused by trauma at the mouth like a bite, an injury caused by a toothbrush, a dental device or braces. It is may recur if it disappears and reappears regularly, sometimes just a few weeks apart.

There are three types of oral ulcers:
  • Minor Ulcers are the most common. They may appear inside a cheek, lips, tongue, gums and more rarely on the palate. These ulcers are generally less than one centimeter in diameter and can be manifold. There are sometimes up to six simultaneous oral ulcers.
  • The largest ulcers or major are more serious and can last from five to ten weeks. When they are close to the tonsils, they can be very painful, especially when swallowing. This type of ulcer is generally isolated.
  • There are ulcers that sometimes appear very small and very painful, type Herpetiformis, which can persist for one to two weeks. A healthy lifestyle is important: balanced diet, regular practice of a sporting activity and stress management.

  • Have a rigorous oral hygiene
  • Avoid spicy foods, acidic, salty, especially hot or cold, which can aggravate the symptoms
  • Eat balanced, fruit and vegetables
  • Doing gargle with warm salt water
