Details

How does Alli work?

This product has a quite original mechanism of action . Indeed, it occurs inside the digestive tract, preventing certain enzymes, lipase, produced by the stomach and pancreas degrade triglycerides in smaller elements, fatty acids and monoglycerides. The result: about 30% fat is eliminated in the stool without passing through the digestive wall and therefore without being assimilated by the body.

Alli should be taken immediately before, during or up to one hour after each major meal to block fat absorbed by the body.

What scientific studies have proven the benefits of Alli?

A major study was recently published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) during which 539 people were obese, three times a day for one year, or 120 mg of Orlistat, or a placebo, along with a diet and the practice of physical exercise. The weight loss was measured using the body mass index (BMI). The BMI takes into account variations not only due to weight but also due to size.

The results obtained at the end of the treatment are described below:

• A significant decrease in BMI (-0.55 kg/m2) was observed in people treated with Orlistat, while an increase of 0.31 kg/m2 BMI was found among patients in the placebo group.
• Those who presented a reduction of 5% of their BMI and weight were nearly twice as many in the group treated with Orlistat in the placebo group (respectively 26.5% and 19% against 15.7 % And 11.7%).
• People treated with Orlistat showed a larger decline of body fat (2.4 kg against 0.4 kg).
• The waist has decreased significantly in patients taking Orlistat, then it has increased in patients who received the placebo (-1.33 cm against +0.12 cm).
• People who responded to treatment (weight loss> 5% after 12 weeks) presented a reduction in weight of 7.6 kg and a decrease of 3.7 kg/m2 BMI.
• The treatment was well tolerated.

Side effects:

• The side effects of Alli are mild and due to its action in the digestive tract. They are generally limited to light gastrointestinal disorders. In general, these are symptoms of low intensity, appear at the beginning of the treatment, and disappear after some time. They occur mostly after meals rich in fats.

Warnings

Intended for adults over 18 years. Alli should not be taken by people allergic to orlistat, suffering from liver, gallbladder, kidney problems or a chronic malabsorption syndrome (lack of absorption of food through the digestive tract) . Please report to your doctor if you have kidney or liver failure, or if you are under medical treatment. Alli is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Treatment with Alli can potentially alter the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). For the vast majority of patients treated with Alli, up to two years during clinical trials, blood concentrations of vitamins A, D, E and K and beta-carotene remained within the limits of normal. To meet the nutritional balance of patients following a regime, should be advised to have a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and a multivitamin supplementation can be considered. If a multivitamin supplementation is recommended, it must be taken at least two hours after administration of Alli or at bedtime.

Directions

The recommended dose for Alli is a 60mg capsule immediately before, during or up to one hour after each major meal. If a meal is skipped or contains no fat, taking Alli should be omitted. The patient must follow a diet moderate calorie, well-balanced in terms of nutritional and containing approximately 30% of calories as fat. It is recommended that the scheme is rich in fruits and vegetables. The daily intake of fat, carbohydrates and proteins must be spread over three main meals. Do not take more than 3 capsules per day. Dosages greater than 60 mg 3 times per day do not provide any additional benefit. Alli causes an increase in the amount of fat in the stool 24 to 48 hours after dosage. A cessation of treatment, fecal fat content usually comes back to the pretherapeutic values in 48 to 72 hours. No data on the safety and efficacy was available beyond 2 years, the duration of treatment with Alli should not exceed 2 years.
